Socialise is a first in New Zealand and Australasia. It’s a virtual chat website where people can sign up to meet other people. It can be used as a socialising place or a dating website.

It’s a unique website because it incorporates some very slick graphics and technologies to make the experience seem almost seamless and real. Users can invent their own dress, colouring and hairstyles and spend time in places such as: the seaside; cruise ship, café, nightclub, and more. The avatars (animated characters) are operated by the user to talk to others in a chat environment, plus they can walk about, dance, drink, sit down and generally hob-nob with other visitors.

Socialise is technically highly complex and uses a very wide array of online technologies. The avatars and virtual rooms operate in real time for any number of online participants. Users can talk to each other and engage in a wide range of interactive activities, all of which must be conducted to take account of variable internet conditions, including people using different browsers operating in a range of speeds.

All users are tracked using a comprehensive database and the site administration copes with a matrix of users and both ‘public’ and ‘private’ interactions.

The design of the website made extensive use of illustration to create virtual environments and animated figures. All this, plus the general website graphics were designed by the FRESCO studio.
